CRD Makes Progress on Sewage Treatment Plans

Victoria, British Columbia - The Capital Regional District (CRD) continues to make major progress in developing a wastewater management strategy for the region, Alan Lowe, chair of CORE Area Liquid Waste Management, said today.

“We are currently involved in a variety of initiatives as we work towards completing sewage treatment plans for the region,” said Lowe. “Staff, elected officials and technical experts are all working diligently to ensure our final plan is completed and submitted to the BC government by the end of June 2007.”

As part of these efforts, the CRD commissioned outside technical experts to prepare a series of discussion papers on various topics related to sewage treatment. Two of these discussion papers, dealing with design criteria and the triple bottom line respectively, are completed and available on the CRD’s website.

Other papers, on topics ranging from technology assessment, to location criteria and odour control, will be posted on the CRD’s website once completed. In total, eight discussion papers will be prepared, which will assist the CRD in the development of its wastewater strategy.

“We know that sewage treatment is a priority for our residents and as planning work continues we are committed to keeping people informed about important milestones and the progress we make,” said Lowe.

The wastewater plan is expected to be completed by June 2007. It will then be sent to the provincial government for approval, which will provide the basis for a long-term solution for sewage treatment.
