CRD Votes to Acquire a Smaller Area of Land at Macaulay Point; 13.8 Hectares Request Reduced to 2.92 Hectares
Victoria, BC – The Capital Regional District (CRD) has voted to acquire 2.92 hectares of land at Macaulay Point in Esquimalt, rescinding an earlier request for 13.8 hectares, CRD ViceChair Karen Watson announced today.
“The request for a smaller area is consistent with the commitments contained in the Core Area Liquid Waste Management Plan,” said Watson. “Under the plan, the CRD is obligated to acquire land at Macaulay Point and Clover Point in Victoria to hold in reserve for the provision of wastewater treatment facilities.”
At its September 14 meeting, the CRD Board agreed to forward a request to the Department of National Defence (DND) to rescind its request to the DND in November 2004 for 13.8 hectares and to reserve a 2.92hectare parcel adjacent to the existing property occupied by the Macaulay Point pump station.
“This decision is based on a reassessment of the CRD’s needs. Following completion of pilot testing of wastewater filtration technologies in 2004 and 2005, there was an opportunity to further refine the area requirements for treatment," added Watson. The CRD’s Core Area Liquid Waste Management Plan was approved by the provincial government in March of 2003.
